Ch. 20 - Teachability
I really liked this chapter (along with most of the others). We must remain teachable, if we aren't willing to learn then I feel this limits God's ability to use us; we will stop growing and stop hearing His voice. I have referred to the mature fruit many times - once an apple is mature it begins the rotting process (if it is not used for another purpose such as applesauce or pie it rots). I don't want to reach that "I am mature and don't need to learn anymore" attitude!!
Ch. 21 - Vision
Another area I struggle with. I (we) have a vision for our farm - what will need improving, where or how to expand, etc. However, when I look deep inside myself, I really don't have a vision for myself. Something I need to work on.
I have enjoyed reading this book. Sometimes the self reflection hurt - big time. But it has also made me more aware of my weaknesses and my strengths. This book will definitely stay by my bed and be referred to in the future.
"Dear Lord, help me to remain green and teachable that I may grow stronger for you."
If we want students to become FERVENT, PASSIONATE, FIERCE followers of Christ, that is what we MUST live out in front of them. This blog is dedicated to supporting Ardent leadership as they grow out loud!

Annette's Nov & Dec book review
Here I thought I was just doing my December review. OOPS! I had started this one and never finished. I finished the book. Overall - 6 stars out of 5.
Chapter 16: Responsibility
"Good leaders never embrace a victim mentality." They work hard, are self motivated (think of themselves as self-employed - like that), don't say things like "that's not my job", and are driven by excellence. I really liked how he said "stress comes from doing less than you can". That is SO true! And as I train other leaders, I am always trying to show that to them! If you would think ahead and prepare, you do less and stress less. Well said Mr. Maxwell.
Chapter 17: Security
KRISTIE, ARE YOU READING THIS? ;-D We just talked about this recently...I think this holds a lot of leaders back. My husband included! At work, he is a driven, organized, forward-thinking leader. But that doesn't always translate to every situation he's in. He doesn't always feel like he has authority. I see this in so many people I work with! "No one can live on a level inconsistent with the way he sees himself." How do you see yourself? Through the eyes of God? Or through a clogged filter accumulated by past experiences, unsupportive loved ones, and perceived failures?
Chapter 18: Self-Discipline
Ouch - we all hate this one. I think this says it all..."Anyone who does what he must only when he is in the mood or when it's convenient isn't going to be successful." This is the clincher! All the procrastinators need to understand this! I also liked that he said we need to challenge and eliminate any tendency to make excuses. Be honest with yourself and just don't go there!
Chapter 19: Servanthood
JESUS! That wraps it all up! I think we've heard a lot about this principle in our church (thank God). Servanthood is intentional...doesn't happen by accident.
Chapter 20: Teachability
This is why we did Signet! And why I'm doing it again next year. The one consistent theme I hear from different leaders is this principle - to remain teachable. Keep learning! And I thought it was really good when he said the leader "who keeps making the same mistakes" makes no progress. Forget your mistakes and keep going, BUT remember what they taught you!!
Chapter 21: Vision
Very well said. There are entire books just written about this idea. (I have some great ones if you'd like to read more.) The Word of God says "without vision, people perish". This is SO important! And if you're a leader, you can serve the vision of others - but you should also seek God about what your personal vision is! You only have this one life. What has He purposed for YOU to do? "Vision leads the leader." So good... I thought it was so insightful when he described the different voices you need to listen to in finding vision. I have never heard it said that way before. I will definitely refer back to this book in the future. So many nuggets and practical things to walk these principles out!
Thanks for reading it with me!!

Kristie's Nov Reading
Ch. 16 - Responsibility
I think Mr. Maxwell hit the nail on the head when he said that 'People now focus more on their rights than on their responsibilities.' So many people want to lay blame on someone else instead of stepping up and being responsible. Being 'self-employed' we have to be responsible it is up to us to get our work done, there is no second shift that will pick up where we slack off. In ministry we have to be responsible there is NO room for slackers. Sometimes I think maybe we have to learn to say no if we can't get a task done by ourselves or within a time frame we have to be responsible and ask for help or step aside so the job can get done. Saying no is a responsible thing to do; we can't be 'yes people' and then fail to complete the task. Two more of John's quotes that were good: 'No one can do the minimum and reach his maximum potential.' and 'Failure to hit the bulls eye is not the fault of the target. To improve our aim, we must improve ourselves.'
Ch. 17 -Security
I feel this chapter dealt a lot with self evaluation. Can a person with a lack of self confidence still be secure with them self? Reflecting on it: I know my weaknesses and my strengths (for the most part). I am secure with who I am on this ministry team; however this doesn't mean that I become content and not allow myself to grow and be stretched.
Ch. 18 - Self-Discipline
I think this is an area where a lot of people struggle. I know I struggle with dieing to myself and doing what I know I need to do: devotions, pray time, eating healthier, exercising, etc. But Mr. Maxwell summed it up 'If you have several reasons why you can't be self-disciplined, realize that they are really just a bunch of excuses - all of which need to be challenged if you want to go to the next level as a leader.' Or the next level as a Christian, healthier person, or better spouse.
"Lord, help me challenge my long list of excuses!!"
Ch.19 - Servanthood
This was an encouraging chapter to me, maybe because I have no problems with serving people. I love to do things for others. I feel my day has been a success when 1st: I have made someone laugh or at least smile; 2nd: when I have been able to do something for someone else.

Alexis' October Reading
Chapter 11
Listening is a valuable tool in which people need in order to feel safe and to get through life’s struggles. As a counselor I have learned that some people just come into a session to be heard and for no other reason. Today, too many families are getting busy with jobs and schedules that go over and beyond which affects their relationships. If parents would listen to their children the families we see today would be in more successful. Notice I didn’t say that parents have to agree with their kids but listening is a vital part of relationships that is needed for children to feel accepted, learn, and grow.
Chapter 12
Passion is a huge part of why I do what I do. Without passion I would not be able to survive in the field of counseling or my career. When my feelings lie to me and I don’t feel like continuing on with day to day behaviors with the youth, I remember the passion that the Holy Spirit has given me and somehow I always find the strength, desire, and most importantly the passion that helps me focus on my goal and to continue in the field that God has called me to.
Chapter 13
A positive attitude can be challenging at times, especially when a child that I am working with have so many obstacles to face and it doesn’t seem like the child is willing to learn. However, if just one person will believe in that child, something beautiful occurs. Regardless of the mistakes that child makes, the child begins to experience something new that he/she has never felt. This is the value that I am important, that there is hope, and that I can also have a positive attitude that can affect the rest of my life! The power of our lifestyle and have a positive attitude truly does impact those around us.
Chapter 14
Problem solving: This is very important in my life because time after time I had to find a way through the storms to achieve my heart’s goals. This was not easy. I laugh because at times it is easier for me to help others through their storms than to solve my own problems that I face. But that is why we need each other as the body of Christ, to build one another up, to spur each other on in love, and finally to fulfill God’s plan of reaching the lost!
Chapter 15
Relationships are such an essential part of what God intended us to do as the body of Christ. That is to be an extension of His heart, such as caring for the sick and poor, encouraging someone at the bank or store, and finally revealing that is through God’s relationship with us that we can enter into the eternal Kingdom with Him! The power of grace is what makes our relationship so beautiful with Christ and the lost.
Chapter 16
Responsibility is what God requires from us. If I am unwilling to follow through as a good steward or a hard worker than what fruit am I going to bring forth. But if my heart is willing and I do everything I can to achieve goals the reward is others can see that my responsibility is to do my best. This is when blessings can occur and God can trust me with what He has given me, which leads to the rewards of accomplishment and success.

Annette's October Reading
Ch. 11: Listening
BINGO - this is a big one for me right now. I definitely catch myself listening for facts and information, and sometimes forget to listen to the heart of the person. Sometimes people just want/need to talk. I do however know that I am able to read between the lines. That's where the Holy Spirit comes in to listening - having discernment! I wholeheartedly agree that the majority of communication problems come from poor listening. Definitely true in my leadership and personal life. I'm also reminded how important it is to seek mentoring, no matter where you are in life. I do this primarily through books right now, but also through my Pastor, and other leaders I respect (Pastor Mark, Dean Nifferotus, Mark Zweifel). I'd like to find a woman leader that I can connect with.
Ch. 12: Passion
LOVE this chapter. It is all so true - so well put. This is the one thing that I've struggled with in training leaders in the past. And I think I need to start by asking them what they're already passionate about instead of trying to convince them to be passionate about the same things I am! DUH! This is a powerful thought, "To add growth, lead followers - to multiply, lead leaders." Makes perfect sense... I thought it was very insightful to "follow your passion instead of others' perceptions". Sometimes we try to be something we're not.
Ch. 13: Positive Attitude
This seems so common sense to me, but it really is essential to effective leadership. And it is a CHOICE! We are not controlled by our circumstances. This principle should be made clear by the Word of God as well. No one wants to be around a sour Christian, let alone a sour leader. And remember that "who you are is who you attract"! Is your mind conditioned to win???
Ch. 14: Problem Solving
Love this one too! I can usually anticipate problems, but my main issue is to solve them ONE BY ONE. I like how he said you have to make them "line up for you one by one". That's great advice for me. I don't run from problems. Even the whiners and complainers in your life can help you have insight about things that may go wrong. That's how I choose to let them influence me. :o) I also think it's great wisdom to not make decisions when you're down. Emotions betray us all the time.
Ch. 15: Relationships
You'd be surprised how many leaders neglect this area. I think they unintentionally view their team members as resources and tools, rather than people! I love to work with people on a team. I think it's the truly God-way to lead...to involve the body of Christ. "People respect a leader who keeps their interests in mind." I hope that I'm remaining aware of these things. You better let me know!! :o) But I do work hard to remember that we all have full lives to live, in addition to fulfilling our calling.

Ch. 11 - Listening
What an important characteristic!!
With all of the newest and latest technology that we rely on everyday, I feel that listening is becoming a lost trait. Instead of calling and talking to someone, or visiting with them we text, email or facebook them, and wait for their response. Or if we are face to face visiting with someone; either they or ourselves are receiving and answering texts. Yes, I know that we are all capable of 'multitasking' but if we are really listening to someones heart - can't that text or phone call wait? We live in such a fast paced world that it requires much effort and discipline to really listen. Listening requires more than our ears, we need to capture the unspoken words, expressions, hurts, and feelings. I loved Larry Kings statement: "...nothing I say this day will teach me anything. So if I am going to learn, I must do it by listening."
Ch. 12 - Passion
'Nothing can take the place of passion in a leader's life.' I think this statement applies to all people, not just leaders. We live in a world of apathy. Many people have no passion, whether it is at work to do a job well, in a marriage or relationship that might be struggling, and most importantly in a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is easy to take an easy out and just not care.
I am reminded of a saying 'you have to stand for something or you will fall for anything'. What moves me? What am I willing to give my time for? Why do I get out of bed in the morning? What will I fight for as I take my last breath?
Ch. 13 - Positive Attitude
Two statements really clicked with me: 1)your attitude is a choice!! [I have believed this for years] and 2)maintaining a positive attitude is easier than regaining one.
I have two sisters, one is very negative. I love her but when I call her, our phone conversation is short (maybe 20 minutes) and to the point. My other sister is more positive and upbeat when I call her, we talk for at least an hour (usually more). Negativity breeds negativity - positive attitudes encourages positive attitudes. It is important to recognize which and who is influencing us. Bad things happen to everybody, but our attitude changes how that 'bad thing' may affect us. How do we choose to learn from that experience or do we let it become a gripe session. Do we sulk and take on the victim mentality or do we brush ourselves off, look at what can be learned and move on.
Ch. 14 - Problem Solving
"Rising to the challenge separates's winners from whiners."
We will all face problems, unfavorable events, and at some time make a bad choice or two. But most things can be corrected or at least worked out. The only true mistake is one we do not learn from. Problem solving requires so many of the qualities we have read; discernment, courage, initiative, and commitment.
Ch. 15 - Relationships
"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care." This statement speaks volumes. So many people develop relationships to benefit themselves, they really aren't concerned about how to 'better' the other person/people involved. Mr. Maxwell's statement: 'If your focus is on what you can put into people rather than what you can get out of them, they'll love and respect you.' SO GOOD!! When I examined myself according to Mr. Maxwell's 'reflecting on it' I feel I do well with long-term interaction, I am able to sustain relationships; however, my ability to mix well with strangers struggles severely. Which I think goes back to my communication skills. My prayer: that I will be able to pour into people this weekend at convention. Help me to put a '10' on everyone.

Eric's Goal
Goal: For one month take the intiative to make all the decisions about where to eat out, what to do on a Friday or Saturday night, etc. And have Theresa write quick notes in a journal about it.
Eric's Oct. Maxwell Reading
Ch. 11 - Listening: You have 2 purposes for listening: to connect with people and to learn. What could be important than this when getting to know somebody.
Ch. 12 - Passion: There is no substitute for passion. It is fuel for the will. If you want anything badly enough, you can find the willpower to achieve it. The only way to have that kind of desire is to develop passion. I like the comment "concetrate on what you do well and do it better than anybody else."
Ch. 13 - Positive Attitude: Having a positive attitude is essential. Your attitude is crucial because it determines how you act and who you are is who you attract. Having a positive attitude will inspire those around you and have a good attitude. The week that I fasted negativity I'll admit at times it was hard expectially at work with all the negativity around me and the work that I looked at was wrong, but making the choice to keep a good attitude and stay positive made the day easier and faster.
Ch. 14 - Problem Solving: The ability to solve problems effectively comes from experience facing and overcoming obstacles. This could also go with positive attitude because when dealing with a difficult problem having a positive attitude can help with the situation.
Ch. 15 - Relationships: If your focus is on what you can put into people rather than what you can get out of them, they'll love and respect you and these create a great foundation for building relationships. I believe the main purpose of this is love people.
Ch. 16 - Responsibility: Responsible people never protest, "That's not my job." They're willing to do whatever it takes to complete the work needed by the organization. I can relate to this because at work I hear "That's not my job" alot and I have said it as well, so I agree if you want to succeed, be willing to put the organization ahead of your agenda and be willing to go the extra mile.
Ch. 12 - Passion: There is no substitute for passion. It is fuel for the will. If you want anything badly enough, you can find the willpower to achieve it.
Theresa's October- December Goals
With the emphasis on Honor Team throughout the church it seemed right to establish this in Ardent. Here are my action steps:
1) Re-write the Honor Team Host description for how it would apply in Youth Ministry
2) Work with the team to implement new changes.
3) Schedule the team members using Worship Planning.

Theresa's October Maxwell reading
11- Listening: The quote I like is "Before a leader can touch a person's heart, he has to know what's in it, he learns that by listening". How else do we really get to know someone if we don't listen to them and learn by what they are telling us. He says that the purpose for listening is to connect with people and to learn. We should start listening not only for words, but also for feelings, meanings, and under currents. I really enjoy listening to people talk but I'm going to be more purposeful so I can learn from what they are telling me.
12- Passion: Here he talks about the action steps to achieve your passion.
1. Desire determines your destiny.
2. Increase your willpower.
3. Allow it to change you.
4. Make the impossible possible.
I want people to know that I am passionate, and not just because I am emotional about something, but because I want to be apart of something bigger than myself.
13- Positive Attitude: The quote here that I really liked was "Many of lifes failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up".- Thomas Edison.
Your attitude is a choice, it detemines your actions, as a leader your people mirror your attitude, and maintaining a good attitude is easier than regaining one. I really liked this chapter and it helped me realize that when I have a bad attitude about one area of my life it affects all the other areas of my life. So I'm going to try to remember that and by doing so I know that I will be a much healthier person.
14- Problem Solving: I thought it was interesting that he said you should look for trouble so that you can gain experience by dealing with them. I don't think it's difficult to find trouble and I generally would not go looking for it but I do agree that once you deal with a difficult situation you gain much more knowledge. I was also encouraged when he stated that you should surround yourself with problem solvers because this is another way to learn.
15- Relationships: I always looked at relationships as something that was a give and take mentality. When it seems too one sided the relationship seems to be unbalanced, but after reading this chapter it reminds me that we can learn so much about people when we don't look at what we are getting out of it. He says here that, you can not be a truly effective leader, the kind people want to follow, unless you love people, understand people, and help people. If your focus is on what you can put into people rather than what you can get out of them, they'll love and respect you. I want to put more good in people and not worry about what I get out of it.

Goals
There are a lot of things that need to be done before the baby comes. I need to get organized and get them done. Annette's summary because somehow the text didn't get saved. :o)
Vicky's Goals October-December
I guess my biggest goal right now is getting ready for the baby.
1) I need to make a list of everything we need and a list of wants: clothes, crib, etc. and then mark off everything I have, and then go get the things that we think we really need.
2) Get a labor plan. I've been doing that already somewhat - do some more research on the different options and at least have a plan before we get there of what we are doing and decide if there are things that we are definetely not doing.
3) Preparing the baby room completely.
4) Making a list of what still needs to be done and then making a schedule of how we are going to accomplish that.

Vicky's September blog - Chapters 6-10
6: Courage - After reading this chapter I realized I haven't done anything in quite awhile that I was really afraid to do. I've definitely been living in my comfort zone. When I was 22 or 23 I went on a 3 month mission trip to Zambia, to see if that's where I thought that God wanted me to serve as a full time missionary. At the end of my time there I got to go on vacation to Victoria Falls and I went bungee jumping, got in a crocodile pit, and held a snake. The crocodile pit was broader line stupid but when I came home I really did feel invincible for awhile. Even later when I felt like God wanted me to move there - I was terrified of raising money to go but God was faithful, etc. While there I had to do things that I was scared to do all the time. But I was very confident in God being faithful, etc. I know doing things that I feared - sucked at the time but it was very good, exciting, and developing/confidence builder. When I moved back home I had some ministry failures... I felt like God wanted me to help with things and was very confident/excited they would work out a certain way and it seemed like somethings went right and lot of things went wrong. I haven't really done much that I feared since then. So I guess I need to get over it and figure out what I'm supposed to be doing now. Anyways - this chapter really made me think and I do need to do something that scares and get out of my comfort zone.
7: Discernment: I thought this chapter was really good. Being able to see the root of a problem and not just the fruit/crisis/drama of the root is huge in a leader. Alot of people can only see the problems that result because of the root so they try to fix the surface problem but don't fix anything because they didn't get to the root so the problems keep coming back. I think discernment is a gift from God to a certain degree. I think discernment can be developed but I think alot of insight is God revealing the root problem/solution to us. In the book it said "if you can see the root issue of a problem , you can solve it." I think that's very true
8: Focus: Focusing mainly on areas of strength verses areas of weakness - seems like a great idea! I liked how he broke it down into percentages: 70% developing your strengths, 25% growing and changing and only 5% on areas of weakness. I liked what he said about staffing your weaknesses instead of trying to be all things in every situation. I think it takes a confident/secure leader to be able to have someone help them that's better in area then they are. I've know a few leaders that aren't secure enough in their position to allow that to happen and their ministry stays small and less effective because of it.
9: Generosity: Somethings I got out of this chapter: it's hard to be generous unless you are content with what you have, to be generous you need to put others first. A quote out of the book that I liked "You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you." Everyone - no matter what our situation is - can be generious is some way. Makine generiousity a habit is a great idea.
10: Initative: "To be and effective leader you have to know what you want...." I'm lacking in this area as far as youth ministry goes. I thought it was good what he quoted about - if you know something needs to be done do it - basically don't wait for someone to push you to act you should have enough initative on your own. I shouldn't need Pastor Annette or anyone else pushing me to do something that I know I'm supposed to do. Not that encouragement doesn't help but if I know I'm supposed to do something - I'm not a very developed leader if I need someone to halfway make me do it - or at least that's what I think he was saying and I agree with that. Not that a person doesn't need encouragement to do something that scares you I suppose.
Being ok with making mistakes seems to be important. Not letting failures bother when they happen because if I'm taking risks they are going to happen and if I'm a good leader I have to take risks.

Alexis' Goal for Oct-Dec
Goal: Get organized and ready for our new baby to come!!
Action Steps:
Action Steps:
- Take time to write out a personal inventory that includes work schedule, ministry schedule, social schedule, and other weekly/monthly tasks (i.e. groceries, house cleaning, family visits).
- Talk with Joshua about what areas we/I should consider backing off on after the baby is born - at least for a while.
- Pray for wisdom about how to balance our adjusted schedule.
- Based on our discussion and God's leading from prayer, write up a tentative monthly schedule (on a blank calendar) to give us an idea of what our new schedule will look like.
- Based on that schedule, we will be able to determine what "non-essential" activities we can agree to.
- Show the personal inventory and adjusted schedule to Pastor Annette for accountability.

Kristie's 3-month goal (Oct-Dec)
My goal for this last quarter is to actually apply the "21 Indispensable Qualities of a Leader" to my life. It is easy to read a book and think 'I need to work on this point or that quality' but honestly once the book is read and put away - nothing more gets done. So my goal is to work on these leader qualities that need improving in my life.
My action steps:
My action steps:
- List the 21 qualities (or at least those we have already read)
- Grade myself on each quality and possible seek some input from Pastor Annette to be sure I grade myself fairly. It is easy for me to be critical of me.
- To focus on those that need improvement. and doing this by:
- deciding which will be the most important qualities to work on (in my life). I don't think it would be right to try to improve all that needs improvement because that would be overwhelming.
- to as John Maxwell puts it - "flesh it out"
- to journal my thoughts, efforts, and acheivements.

Sept post Alexis
Chapter 6: This chapter really spoke to me of the importance of courage. I struggled in this area when I was growing up. It took a lot for me to get up and play my guitar for the first time in front of my peers at youth group but as I practiced and grew in confidence and had the support of believers I was able to find courage to continue my heard of fulfilling my goal as a worship leader!
Chapter 7: Discernment has been a challenge for me because I tend to get very busy but I have to slow down and take my time to listen to the Holy Spirit speaking inside of me, whether it be at work or at home. Once I do take the time to pray and spend with God I find myself realizing that inside He was guiding me all along. I just needed to listen!
Chapter 8: As I have concentrated on my goals of organizing, I have really seen that my focus has paid off. I can see the end of the tunnel and my work load has become less stressful. It is amazing what happens when we take the time to focus on what our priorities are, rather than just becoming overwhelmed in our chaotic schedules. I am excited to see how focus plays a part in leadership skills and requires a goal!
Chapter 9: This chapter discusses generosity which is an essential tool for a leader. I have found that although I don’t have money to give, I still can have generosity by giving of my talents as a worship leader, listening to an individual in need, and supporting those kids whether it be at youth group or work with the guidance that they need to stay on the right path!
Chapter 10: Initiative, which this chapter describes in detail is a tool that I need to continue to develop! Like I have said before I tend to get busy with work and life that I need to find time to slow down to see other opportunities where I am needed. However I think it is important that if you see many opportunities to not take them all because that become too overwhelming. I think if one can set priorities and than pray about what opportunities that God would lead one into, decide, and than act on it with one’s whole heart, the beauty of initiative than is conveyed!

Eric's Sept. Maxwell Reading
Ch. 6 - Courage: A leadership position doesn't give a person courage, but courage can give him a leadership position. Courage is something that doesn't come easy for me and for those who know me I struggle when I have to speak in front of a group of people so I agree with courage begins with an inward battle.
Ch. 7 - Discernment: Enables a leader to see a partial picture, fill in the missing pieces intuitively, and find the real heart of a matter. For me this is a work in progress because I get those gut instincts but I don't always listen to them.
Ch. 8 - Focus: The keys are priorities and concentration. I would have to say this is another work in progress in my life because I am guy that flys by the seat of my pants, but when I do focus and set priorities I do fill like I have accomplished something.
Ch. 9 - Generosity: The only way to maintain an attitude of generosity is to make it a habit to give your time, attention, money and resources. I like helping people in giving of my time and talents and having that sense of fullfillment when I see the smiles of those I've helped.
Ch. 10 - Intiative: Constantly on the lookout for opportunity, knows what they want, willing to act, take risks, make mistakes and sometimes fail. This is not a strong point in my life. I'm very indecisive and I hate to fail. As you can see I need to work on these areas in my life and I continue to pray that God will strengthen these areas and help me become a stronger leader.

Annette's 3 month goal (Oct-Dec)
Goal: To plan the EP In Action schedule through the winter. Since we can't work outside most of the time, I need to plan how we can get out and serve the community indoors.
Action Steps:
Action Steps:
- Contact the assisted living and retirement facilities to see who is willing to have a group of students come in.
- Contact some of the younger "Grandmas" (50's-60's) in our church to see if we could do a baking day, and then deliver the baked goods to senior saints.
- Contact the local contact center, banquet, women's shelter, etc. to see if there are any jobs they would need help with.

Annette's Sept Reading
Oops - I wrote 95% of this last week and then realized I forgot to post it.
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I'm so inspired...
Ch. 6: Courage
I hate how pompous it sounds - but this is one area that I feel pretty good about. God has brought me through so much that I've learned to trust Him and keep going even when I'm scared out of my wits (not every time, but most of the time). And that does make people feel secure in following you! Right on John! "Fear limits a leader." Don't let fear hinder you anymore guys!
Ch. 7: Discernment
I think this is the best definition of discernment that I've ever heard. "Discernment enables a leader to see a partial picture, fill in the missing pieces intuitively, and find the real heart of a matter." Awesome. Very balanced advice to not ignore that "gut feeling", but don't rely entirely on it. "Value nontraditional thinking. Embrace change, ambiguity, and uncertainty. Broaden your horizons experientially." I know some leaders that would feel nauseated after reading those sentences. HAHAHA I say AMEN!
Ch. 8: Focus
This is definitely an area I'm working on! Some of you will remember something I know the Lord spoke to me at camp. He said "cut the fat". I certainly have priorities lined up, BUT sometimes I've allowed unneccessaries to creep in and then my focus shifts from top priorities to managing a bunch of mid-level priorities. So I have been learning to cut that fat from my leadership life. Focus 70% on strengths, 25% on new things (like Signet), and 5% on weaknesses. This approach makes so much sense!
Ch. 9: Generosity
Great principles here! I love the practical information...give something away! Something that IS valuable to you - not rummage sale items! I'm going to think about that...
Ch. 10 - Initiative
"Leaders are responsible for initiating a connection with their followers." What are you going to do with that? Have you taken initiative or are you waiting for them to come to you? This chapter makes me feel better about being so opinionated. HAHA But of course, life is always about balance. Opinions without teamwork and follow through are useless. My opinion (couldn't resist) is that where most of the breakdown happens with leaders is in the "pushing themselves to act" portion. Most people who lead have desire and are willing to take risks and make mistakes. BUT pushing themselves to take action to get it going in the first place is usually where people lack.

Kristie's Maxwell Post
Ch. 6 - Courage
I read this chapter the first few days of September but I have to admit this chapter was so 'in my face' that I put the book down and didn't read anymore till this last week. I know it is not a 'healthy' place to be - but I like my comfort zones. Comfort in my finances, comfort in my relationships, and even comfort in my church. So this is definitely an area that needs work in my life.
Ch. 7 - Discernment
This comes from prayer, experience, gut instincts and being able to analyze a situation unbiasedly. Many times we are 'too close to the forest to see the trees' or too close to a situation and we can't see past ourselves. It takes discernment to know when we have to step up or step back, move forward or sit still, speak up or just keep our mouths closed.
Ch. 8 - Focus
I thought this was a really good chapter. So many times it is easy for me to focus on my weaknesses instead of my strenghts. A personal goal for me is: when we are finished with this book is to list each of these 21 qualities and determine which are my strengths and which I struggle with. And then apply Mr. Maxwell's principles of "fleshing it out". And hopefully grow in the areas that need improvement.
Ch. 9 - Generousity
I feel this is one of my strenghts. I have always been generous. I credit much of this to my Grandma. I can still hear her telling me stories about how she would do without so she could give extra to her husband and children. Even though she has been gone for +25 years her generous legacy lives on; because now I hear my dad talk about how his Mom did without and all she gave up; and it is even more than what she had told me. It is easy for me to put others needs before mine, to be generous with my time; and as we (Keevin and myself) are financially blessed, we have desires and goals to bless others financially also. I loved the comment by John Bunyan: "You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you." And that does not apply to just material things; it can be a person's time or maybe even a kind word to the checker at the grocery store.
Ch. 10 - Initiative
Not a strong quality for me. I am a very indecisive person!! I am not one to make the first step, but I will be more than happy to help someone acheive a task. I feel initiative is grounded by courage. Initiators are willing to act, take risks, make mistakes, and sometimes fail; all courageous things.

Theresa's September Maxwell Post
I enjoy reading this book, there are so many one-liners that just make you go "yea" that's right, kind-of that light-bulb moment. Now walking it out, taking the action, and not just sitting back saying what a good book. I hadn't read chapter 5 on our last reading assignment so I will start there.
5- Competence: Show up, keep improving, follow through, accomplish more than expected, and inspire others. Nobody keeps improving without being intentional about it. Wow, put so simply, yet not the easiest to walk out. I think I need to put this on a post-it note and have it on my mirror at home and my computer at work.
6- Courage: There can be no courage unless you're scared, courage begins with an inward battle, courage is contagious, courage can encourage others, courage not only gives you a good beginning but also provides a better future. I love all these sayings. However, I would tend not to think of myself as a courageous person, I don't like to be in a battle, but I don't want to be weak and taken advantage of either. So I'm looking to apply the next saying into my life: courage is making things right, not just smoothing them over, and needing the ability to see when to stand up and the conviction to do it.
7- Discernment: Discernment enables you to use both your gut and your head to find the best option. Sometimes it's easy to follow your gut instinct but not your head and this is were we usually get ourselves in trouble. Also it states that intuition will only increase with use, we need to broaden our horizon experientially. This is definitely an area that I could put more focus on and ask God for His help on.
8- Focus: To achieve focus the keys are priorities and concentration. I'll admit these can get a little skewed in my day to day life. I'm not always good at setting my priorities in the right places and it definitely causes strife in my life. It never fails that when my week is going well it's usually because my priorities are placed in their proper position. This chapter also states that we should focus on what we do well rather than what we do wrong. It's so much easier to beat ourselves up rather than see the good we accomplish. We need to draw from our strengths rather than just focusing on what we did wrong, because a divided focus always works against us.
9- Generosity: True generosity isn't an occasional event, it comes from the heart. Wow, isn't that the truth. I think this is one area of a person's life that can't be faked, you can tell when someone is truly sincere or when they are just going through the motions. Generosity also permeates every aspect of a leaders life, touching his time, money, talents, and possessions. This is something I know for myself I continually lift to the Lord, that I may not become spoiled because I don't let what He has given me pour back out of my life.
10- Initiative: A person who works in this area knows what they want, push themselves to act, takes more risks, and makes more mistakes. I can say that this is a bit more true for me in my job but not so much so for me in ministry. I think it's much more intimidating to have initiative in ministry because there is more of an eternal aspect and maybe you won't always have a second chance to do it right. I hate making mistakes which is probably why I'm more hesitant in this area, probably means I need to work at this quality more.

Vicky's August reading
2 Charisma: The biggest thing that I got out of chapter 2 is to be othersminded. I think that's great quality to have as a leader and something that I will probably always be working on.
3 Commitment: I think that's very important in leadership because people are never going to be more committed than their leader or not for very long.
4 Communication: This is also a very important factor in being a leader - if you have great ideas/vision/purpose but know one understands their part you are not able to accomplish as much.
5 Competence: I think it's human nature to want to follow someone that you believe in and think they will succeed. Most people want to be better than they are right now so you want to follow someone that's better than you so you can learn from them, etc.

Alexis' August Reading
Ch. 2: Charisma
I really enjoyed this chapter because it revealed to me that I need to be more reflective on my conversation with others. I realized how easy it is to focus on myself, but much more valuable when I focus on others. I really need to display myself to the people that I want to be around. People who are fun, confident, humble, loving and giving. I think it will be a challenge to develop "othermindedness". My eyes were definitely opened to how much I have (and our nation) focused on myself.
Ch. 3: Commitment
I thought the Michaelangelo story was really interesting. I know that commitment is needed to achieve goals and succeed. In the past, I have been able to rise to the challenge of being committed as a worship leader, college student, wife and counselor. I continue to look for ways to fulfill what God has laid on my heart.
Ch. 4: Communication
I realized after reading this chapter that I communicate with others because I enjoy learning and helping those in need. I need to improve in the area of SIMPLICITY! Sometimes when I'm talking to my spouse (for example), I get really complicated in explaining myself. I need to simplify my message, and reflect how others are perceiving what I'm saying.
Ch. 5: Competence
I can always improve in this area. At times, my job feels overwhelming, yet I committed to those kids. So I have to choose to re-engage and continue to be passionate in what I do. I don't just want to succeed - I want to surpass what is expected!

Eric's Aug Maxwell Reading
I am enjoying this book and it is revealing that it takes alot to be a leader. In the charisma chapter what stuck out to me is put a "10"on everyone, expect the best them and help them reach their potential. In the commitment chapter what stuck out to me was the only real
measure of commitment is action, because saying something and putting it into action are two different things. This can be hard with just everday living and for myself sometimes over-extending myself in committing to others. In the communication chapter this was harder chapter for me because I don't feel I am a very good communicator at least not in public but what stuck out to me was was believe what you speak and live it out. With the competence chapter I liked performing at a high level of excellence is a choice, an act of will and with this help inspire and motivate others to do the same. Looking foward to reading more and hopefully put it into action.

Eric's September Goal
Goal: To fast negativity for ONE WEEK. That means choose to respond positively no matter what the situation, and find a way to respond to negativity coming from someone else in a positive way!
Action Steps:
Action Steps:
- I give Theresa permission to be my "observer" while I'm at home. I will let her know when I begin my fast, and she will send accountability emails to Pastor Annette about how I'm doing - both the victories and failures. She does not get to comment or remind me about my fast however. :)
- At work, I don't really have anyone to keep me accountable, but I am still going to commit to doing it.
- I will blog about how the week went and what differences I notice in my thinking as a result of fasting negativity.

Theresa's August Maxwell reading
I must say that I am really enjoying reading this book. I find myself going back over what I just read so that I make sure it's getting in my head. There are so many good quotes and one-liners that keep it so interesting.
Chapter 2: Charisma, this is something I definitely thought people were born with and never knew how to mesure ones' charisma. Reading this I now understand this is a quality everyone can possess but we can increase this quality by having othermindedness. Wow I love this word, and I hope that I will have this at the forefront of my mind at all times. The other line in this chapter that really stood out to me is this: "when you set yourself on fire, people love to come and see you burn." My prayer is that people would see me burn for God and His truth.
Chapter 3: Commitment, this is an area which I know that I should put more focus, that my actions would definitely speak louder than words. He says that true commitment inspires and attracts people. It shows them they you have conviction and that people will believe in you only if you believe in your cause. I want people to be able to look at my life and be inspired and to know that I had true conviction in following God. I want to be as he put it an "all-out".
Chapter 4: Communication, he says here to, simplify your message, see the person, show the truth and seek a response. In the response, when we speak, we should give them something to feel, something to remember, and something to do. That gives me a whole new way of looking at communication, and perhaps remember to think a little more before I speak.
I thought we were only to read to chapter 4, so I'll need to go back and read chapter 5 and post on that. It's all great reading though.

Theresa's third quarter goal.
Goal: Lately , it has felt like I have had very little down time. I think I need to examine my life and see if over committed. If I am, then I need to take steps to make changes so I don't burn out. If I'm not then seeing it on paper will help me to recognize what down time I really do have and perhaps I need to spend it more wisely.
Action Steps:
1. Print out a standard calendar for one month and write down all of the various activities that I'm regularly involved in during an average month.
2. Include the amount of time that is usually spent on activities and if there is any prep time involved.
3. Then include any social activities that I usually do each month (anything that involves someone other than Eric).
4. Make a list of annual events that I usually participate in and include the amount of time that each one usually requires.
5. Show them to Eric to see if he thinks I'm missing anything.
6. For one week I'm going to pray over the calendar and list, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal if there's anything that I'm doing that isn't necessary for His plan for me.
7. Set up a time to go over both with Annette and talk about any issues that may arise from seeing it all laid out.

Annette's Aug Maxwell reading
I blogged about Chapter 2 already, so here are my thoughts on 3-5. Wow I love this book...
COMMITMENT:
Great reminder that "God will see". That should be our #1 motivation to do what we do. Being committed is walking what you're talking - not always easy. Something that really jumped out at me was in the Reflecting section. He talked about 4 types of people: Cop-outs, Holdouts, Dropouts, and All-outs. That is so simple but SO right on! What a great opportunity to reflect on where I am. Our commitment level is pretty easy to measure when we look at our calendar and our checkbook.
COMMUNICATION:
"Educators take something simple and make it complicated. Communicators take something complicated and make it simple." (page 23) This summarizes my goal in communicating to students! Breaking down the mysterious Christianese that is out there into a genuine, influential, truthful Gospel message. And if we don't learn to effectively communicate with each other, ministry suffers! We lose effectiveness when we can't work together as a team.
COMPETENCE:
This is really a huge factor for me when it comes to choosing fellow leaders to work with. A lot of people see the need, understand the vision, have passion about what needs to be done...but many of them don't follow through with doing their part in making it happen. This is the major reason that we are doing Signet this year. It's an opportunity for you to seek ways to keep learning, growing and improving. This is a NECESSARY part of leading others. Why should they stretch and grow if they don't see you doing that? Why should a student sacrifice anything to live out their God-given purpose if they see us only doing what is convenient to our lifestyle? Excellence is a choice that we must model to help others around us grow. Good enough can't be good enough.
Help us Lord to implement these qualities we're reading about!!!

Kristie's August Maxwell Review
I am enjoying this book even though it is teaching me that my thoughts on leadership are wrong.
So here are some of the highlights that ‘pricked’ at my heart and mind:
Ch. 2 Charisma
One of the thoughts that John Maxwell brought out was to “put a ‘10’ on every person’s head”. I have to admit that there are times I fail to do this-not that I think I am better than them; but when someone has disappointed me (or with teenagers if they seem to be a ‘troublemaker’) I have drawn back from reaching out to and encouraging that person. So I have really worked on putting a 10 on each of the teens since I feel called to this ministry. They have to know that I value and love them and that I care about how their life is going.
Ch.3 Commitment
I really liked this chapter. We have to remember always that even if no one else sees what we do or hears what we say or think; that God sees, hears, and knows are thoughts. Mr. Maxwell's qualities on commitment were excellent 1) it starts in the heart, 2) it is tested by action, 3) it opens the door to achievement. Our actions will always speak louder than our words, and so many are watching.
Ch. 4 Communication
This area has always been a problem area for me. I have always lacked the self confidence to speak in front of others and I realize that it probably also has something to do with not being able to communicate and share my heart with others. When I try to share my heart I get emotional and seem to ramble. So this is definitely an area where I need to improve; and my goal for this quarter is also geared to improving relational and communication skills.
Ch. 5 Competence
I had no idea that Benjamin Franklin was so industrious. This chapter has caused me to reflect on my attitude - has it been ‘this is good enough’ or has it been ‘to do my best and to see each task as an opportunity to learn and grow’? I need to show up every day (or at every youth event) ready to give my very best. Regardless of how I feel or how my day has been; or what difficult task I may have before me. I must look for ways to keep learning, growing and improving; I cannot afford to ever think ‘I have arrived‘ or that my effort was ‘good enough‘.
It is amazing to me how these qualities intertwine with each other. For instance if I am comfortable just being good enough then have I forgotten that God knows my heart and thoughts. In other words my competence reflects my commitment. And also if I don't offer each student my best then do I truly value them. So again my competence and commitment reflect my charisma. And then to be able to communicate to each of them that I value them.

Josh's 3rd Qtr Goal
My 3rd Qtr goal is to be a better leader.
I know that is pretty broad but I'll break it down a bit in my action steps.
Action Steps
1. I will focus more on making eye contact at home, work, and with the kids on Wednesdays.
-This has been a struggle for me for a long time. I think I have struggled with this since I was a little kid.
2. I will begin again the task of praying that I have opportunity to share Christ's love on a daily basis
3. I will avoid blame shifting and take responsibility for my actions or lack thereof. This happens mostly at home with those I love the most.
4. I will followthrough with setting up and starting the process of budgeting. (Taylor helped me setup some software). This is important for me as a leader because finances continue to side-track me from the things that are important to me as a leader.

Eric's July Post- Maxwell
I am interested in this book and how John Maxwell tells us what it takes to have the qualities of a leader. To improve those areas through self reflection and making those steps to improve in those areas and living it out. I really liked the comment "real character is being bigger on the inside" because it's the one area that God sees in us.

Alexis -Book Review Chap 1- July
I really enjoyed reading the 1st chapter of this book. Character is a vital point to leadership. I have observed leaders in my past who had the talk but when they were tested failed to have the actions and character to back up their knowledge. As I have grown in my walk with Christ I have been tested many times to be Christ like and utilize the knowledge of God's Word. There have been times that I have failed, where I missed it, but it came down to my heart's attitude and character. Even though I messed up I was able to show character. I began to realize that a leader is not perfect but a leader is one who can show Christ's ultimate power through one's life and that is true character when you allow Christ to be the Focus Point and not your self. Whenever I worship I find that my heart is truly to keep Christ at the center. I do try to apply the talent that He has blessed me with but if I focus too hard and my playing and not on Him my focus becomes on my own power rather than God's power working through me. So I challenge you all to not worry about perfection but realize when we allow the Holy Spirit to be our focus, true character will shine through!

Annette - can't help myself
I am LOVING this book! I read Chapter 2: Charisma and I just HAVE to blog about it now. John Maxwell is seriously an anointed author on leadership. In reading that chapter, I realize that I used to be really focused on being charismatic - and making people feel like they are so special. I've gotten jaded over the last few years!!! I was heart broken reading this as I realized that. It made me really examine what has happened. And it's basically that people have rejected my encouragement, or they just used me to get a boost. Somewhere I decided that I wasn't going to be "taken" anymore. I have to change that! God made me to be an encourager. What people do with it is their business with God.
It is so encouraging that he says you can develop these qualities. I think a lot of people have copped out on leadership because they say "I'm just not a leader". We ALL have the potential to lead - but we have to decide to allow God to cultivate these qualities in our lives. And I think the "Bringing it home" sections are SO good! Practical ways to work on these qualities.
John Maxwell is awesome. I follow him on Twitter now - and yet another example of his impeccable leadership, he followed me right back!! John Maxwell will see my tweets! I gotta step up my game. :o)

We ALL have the potential to lead - but we have to decide to allow God to cultivate these qualities in our lives. And I think the "Bringing it home" sections are SO good! Practical ways to work on these qualities.

Josh's John Maxwell 1st post
I can see that this book will be a good one for myself already because I had some character convictions already. Nothing earth shattering but things I most certainly need to address that add stress to me and in-turn add stress to those I love, care about, and minister to. If it doesn't add stress to those I just mentioned it certainly decreases my effectiveness in ministering to them and inhibits the amount of overflow. One thing that has stuck with me from Pastor Jeff's leadership training was the addage "If your output exceeds your input then your upkeep will be your downfall". Very true in any situation, not just spiritually. I can see I will have some heavy self-examination to do. I'm sure a lot of this has to do with us having 2 very young kids and myelf having a very demanding position at work, on top of lots of ministry but regardless of where the pressures are coming from I need to address them now. As he states in the first chapter, "Unaddressed cracks in character only get deeper and more destructive with time."

Vicky's July book review
I'm really liking this book so far. It's always inspiring to read about having better character since it is so important as a christian and as a leader.
I thought it was really powerful when he said we create character everytime we make choices. I believe that is very true whether we make good choices or bad. Bad choices cause us to be weaker the next time we face conflict and good choices cause us to be stronger.
Anyways, I think this is a great book and I'm really glad we're reading it.

Vicky's goal
This is my first time blogging so hopefully I'm doing this right....
My goal -
To think and speak positively about others around me/think the best of people and not point out the flaws that I think I see in them
Plan of action:
1) Find scriptures that talk about how we should think and talk, etc
2) After making a list confess those about myself at least 5 times a week

Theresa's July Maxwell Post
I have never heard of John Maxwell before, but I am very impressed by his writing. There were so many great things he was saying that I found myself going back and reading what I had just read so I could really digest what he was saying. 21 qualities seems to be an amazing amount of qualities to me so I'm looking forward to what they all are.
There were so many statements he made, but 3 of them really stood out to me. First off he says to search for the cracks. Really taking a look inward and admitting where we have flaws, ouch I think this is going to hurt a little. Second statement, "real character is being bigger on the inside". Which is the area of our life that no one else can see except for God and what He thinks of us should matter way more than what other's think. Third statement "You can never separate a leader's character from their actions". Wow, actions really do speak louder than words and it all comes back and truly reveals our character. Like I said before "ouch" this is going to hurt a little by making us really take a good look at ourselves. I guess it's going to a bit like "Spring cleaning" for the soul, probably much needed too.

Theresa's Final Already Gone Review
I'll admit I had a very difficult time reading the rest of the "Already Gone" book. I just got caught up in the focus he was making about Genesis that I didn't want to keep reading. But the book really was good and it opened my eyes that we need to be active in our faith. He states in the end to defend the Word and live the Word, pretty straight to the point. If we really pursue to defend and live the Word what great relevance and authority will come through our lives. I know for myself I need to be better prepared so I am going to order one of the books on apologetics he suggested in his book.
Theresa's 2nd Quarter Goal
My goal is make things more accessible for Hospitality so people aren't wondering where things are at, especially when we have bigger events.
- Organize a Hospitality kit, that has water bottles filled, clipboards with forms, and a "how to" list.
- Have a meeting with Hospitality students to show the kit and have everyone be familiar with steps on welcoming a new student.

Kristie's July Post - Maxwell
I had always thought that people were born leaders and others just didn't have the ability. But about a month ago I read somewhere that people were trained to lead. So it is kind of interesting to me that we are now reading this book.
I have always considered myself to be one of those that was not born with leadership skills (at least not many). I like the quote from John Maxwell: "Leadership truly develops from the inside out. If you can become the leader you ought to be on the inside, you will be able to become the leader you want to be on the outside." So I am ready to be trained and develop into the leader that God sees in me.
A couple other quotes that I really liked:
And lastly

A couple other quotes that I really liked:
"Crisis doesn't necessarily make character, but it certainly does reveal it."One of my personal character tests is how I respond when someone will pull out in front of me and not quite drive the speed limit. Yes, I have found myself repenting many times.
And lastly
"We choose our character. In fact, we create it everytime we make choices..."As I mentioned last night I think this book could be one of those love/hate books. I love what it teaches but I may at times hate what is revealed to me about me.

Annette's July Maxwell Post
From Introduction, "I've written this book to help you recognize, develop, and refine the personal characteristics needed to be a truly effective leader, the kind people want to follow." That's why we're reading this book. The process of becoming that kind of leader definitely takes time, but it also takes INTENTION! It doesn't happen by accident. There is SO much just in this first chapter. I am really excited about this book. But it's going to be brutal at the same time... :o)
"How a leader deals with the circumstances of life tells you many things about his character." This is a frighteningly true statement. Haha. Because we're able to observe this in each other! It made me wonder what people see when I'm going through crisis. Crisis reveals character and makes us choose one of two paths: character or compromise. THAT IS SO GOOD!! What kind of choices am I making when I come to that crossroads? Every crisis offers an opportunity to grow - but do we always take it?
I so appreciate that he gives ways to improve your character! So many books just show you how much you lack without practical answers. Thank you Mr. Maxwell. Through this process, I realized that I have been lazy in respecting my husband. He's been going through some tough times (peace within himself), and I haven't been very compassionate. I've been "tolerant" of it, but because I can't logically understand what he's feeling, I have a hard time being empathetic. Tolerance is not enough in a marriage. Now I'm really searching my heart for how I can be compassionate when he needs that.

Kristie's Third Quarter Goal.
I have come to realize that I struggle with communication; sharing my heart and true feelings. I absolutely hate conflict and I know that I will do or say 'nothing' in order to avoid conflict and 'keep peace'. I come from a family of "stuffers". We stuff it down deep inside to keep peace.
So my goal for this quarter is to read a book that will help to improve my relational skills. I have picked Pastor Annette's brain about what would be a good book and after doing a little research, I have decided to read the book: The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. Yes, this may be a book more directed towards love and married couples but learning how to improve relational skills in my marriage will also help me to better communicate and build better relationships with those around me and with our youth.

2nd Quarter Goal update
Here is the update of my 2nd Quarter Goals
My goal was to become a better small group leader for the 7-8th grade boys and had the following Action Steps: (under each Action Step is the update on the goal)
One thing that complicated this was the shift to the summer experiment and helping with another age group instead of the 7-8th grade boys.
1a. Pray weekly for the boys by name
-I definitely prayed for the boys almost every week but struggled with the names but it really helped when I got the list from Annette. I really helps to have specifics when praying. I know God knows what they need but it helps me to pray in specifics.
1b. Get a list of the boys names from Annette
-Done
2. Write down a couple comments about each boy to remember names/faces
-Partially completed
3. Write up a list of activities with Eric/Annette to do when the boys go AWAL in the minds.
-Didn't write down but Eric and I talked to have a # of backup plans. Here are a few: Paper-Rock-Scissors, fun/dumb facts (like stuff about farting and such-they love it), Having each boy answer a random question before moving to the next bible study question (when appropriate: usually did this after a few Q's or when we needed to bring them back in. We would ask things like "favorite movie, food, worst injury......" Other activities were frisbee golfing, tossing the frisbee the furthest, running/races, relay races, paper football.
4. Have a conversation with Eric about how we are doing with praying for the kids
-Eric and I did this for sure 2 of the 3 months. I really don't remember if it was all 3 months. I think we missed 1 month.

Josh's Final Book Review
We made it!
We made it through the whole book. I have to admit, there was some skimming involved in this book. I feel that the book has certainly brought up some interesting statistics, questions, and possible solutions. I remember at the beginning of the book people posting about being frustrated or offended by the questions he posed or statements he made. As I previously posted, I feel he was very deliberate. He wanted to push you hard enough to ask yourself the needed introspective questions. Would I have done this the way he did, no, but I'm sure we have differing personalities. It was effective enough to get done what he set out to do from the beginning. I feel he wanted us to take a very hard look at how we feel/view Youth Ministry and things related to it. I really try to objectively look at myself when posed with a question. I am more inclined to do this with at the scientific training I received in college. I feel that is truly a great benefit from college and schooling. I feel lots of people have not got this idea down solid, although they attest to SCIENCE being the answer. I, however, was exposed to tons of junk in college that was discussed at length in the book.
I had talked to most people who are posting their book reviews and it seemed that the overall consensus was the book was getting pretty repetitive. I think it was Annette who said something like "I was waiting for......". She was waiting for the author to give this final analysis or conclusion that never seemed to come. Either way, it was a good book in that we read lots of statistics and concepts that challenged us to re-think our views on a lot of things. I knew things were not so great in the United States but I didn't realize it was so bad in Europe. I really liked that he included lots of questionnaires and such. It was good to see the statistics and the more subjective questions with the statistics of how many people felt that way.
He talked a lot about appologetics, which is absolutely needed with this generation versus the last few generations. We definitely need to give an intelligent answer for the hope that is within us. I'm sure everyone will agree that knowledge itself is not enough, we must have knowledge and action. I believe it was socrates that believed with more knowledge we were more virtuous or more good but we know better as christians (with any amount of experience or honesty with ourselves). Just because we know what is right, that doesn't mean we will do it. Paul talked about his struggles with this concept. He knew what was right but he did what was wrong.
All in all, I believe the biggest thing I can take away from this book is the idea that change in okay in church. I knew this was the case but didn't realize how extensive my preferences were. Annette said we have talked about this during Worship practices. We talked about the changes with the summer experiment. I know the book talked about it not being sinful to not have sunday school. I was challenged and still am to be sure my choices in how I exercise my faith is based on exact biblical scripture or personal preference. I know it isn't wrong to follow preference but when that keeps you from spiritual growth of self and the body I believe it can be.

Annette's 3 Month Goal (July-Sept)
Goal: BEGRUDGINGLY, I am going to attempt to complete the Ardent Youth Ministry manual. I don't think I can finish it in 3 months, but I need to get the bulk of it together.
Action Steps:
Action Steps:
- Compile all the material that is currently "floating" around the church files.
- Cut and paste the KEEP material into a new document.
- Identify and write job descriptions for various youth ministry positions.
- Do some online research to look at other A/G church youth ministry materials.
- KEEP IT SIMPLE but be thorough at the same time.

Steve's Final Book Review
This is the final blog for Steve Roux. This book has opened my eyes up. It has given me some insight on how I should educate my children as well as the youth group. It looks like we have alot of catching up to do. Not to make it sound like our job is impossible, but I believe it will be hard road to regain what we once had. We are up against college professors that seem to have this respect simply because the are educated. So what if you are educated when you don't have the truth on your side. Or not willing to face the truth.
It will be tough. Maybe God wants it to be hard. If it was easy we would take it for granted. God wants to see what we are made of. Are we going to trust Him and stand up for our beliefs or sit back and let all the hippies from the 60's continue to distort the truth. We have to state what we believe with intelligence and love. We keep doing this until His return. I say all this to encourage us to do our studying to be ready. If we don't have the answer we will learn where to get it from. Let's stand up.

Annette's Final Review - Already Gone
I think one of the toughest things for me in reading this book is trying to figure out how to have balance! It is obvious that apologetics must be taught in our churches, and that we must be an influence in our world! But does anyone really believe that the Bible is going to be allowed back in our schools and courtrooms as a legitimate source? I would LOVE to hope that could be possible...but is it the best use of resources to spend years fighting for that in court? Is that going to change lives for eternity?
I think one of the most poignant questions Dr. Ham asked the 1,000 young adults was if church was essential. 53% said no. That is disheartening. But I think instead of making excuses or trying to "reason" why they would say that, I think we just need to seek wisdom from God. Is that true in our community? Do we care enough to seek God's heart about what to do to address it? No matter what we try to do or say, the reason for this always comes back to hypocrisy. That is a tough one to swallow. And no amount of apologetics is going to solve that problem. Christians must LIVE what they say they believe.
The church is often falsely judged too. Christians will never be perfect - we are people after all. But if we learn to live the transparent life that Christ did, our witness will be more convincing. We need to remember that our message should be about how Jesus Christ affects REAL LIFE. The Bible is not some history book that doesn't apply today.
I was excited about the things he shared about rediscovering church. We've talked about this in life groups and worship rehearsals lately. We're looking at the New Testament church and seeing that we have veered away from that in some ways. It's not that we have to change everything we do. It's that we're sensing a restlessness that is causing us to examine whether we're doing everything God has called us to. The Gospel won't change, but perhaps our way of sharing it can.
This book isn't just about answering the HOW TO's for changing these alarming statistics. It's about challenging the church to examine the way they present Biblical truth, and the way we live it! I'm okay with being challenged. If we passionately seek God's direction, He will show us how to respond.

Kristie's April, May & June Reading
When I first started reading “Already Gone” it seemed as if there was a somewhat of an easy solution to this ‘epidemic’ - just start teaching apologetics. Now that I have spent the last six months reading and pondering this book and Mr. Ham’s ideas; I have come to the conclusion that I now have more questions than less.
I am not saying Mr. Ham is wrong, I think apologetics is good however I think there is more to it! What about the spiritual aspect - are we as a church teaching the deep spiritual things such as speaking in tongues, being slain in the spirit, etc. Is it evident in the lives of the adults; yet alone our students? Are we helping people to get this whole Christianity thing in their hearts. Are we just whitewashing this whole thing or are we really taking them as deep as we need to? I know the old saying ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink‘. So how do we get our youth and ourselves to thirst for a deeper, closer walk with Christ? Because none of us are immune from this epidemic.
I don’t understand Mr. Ham’s statement “It seems to be more a matter of heart issues than head issues.”. To me apologetics is head knowledge? Maybe I am misunderstanding what he is trying to say. Don’t get me wrong I see the importance of apologetics - I am just trying to put on paper the thoughts and ideas going through my head.
Reading this book has been good - I feel it has pushed me to look at things from maybe a little different angle and given me some new insight. I don’t feel like the true ’vaccine’ is in this book. But it has shown us ideas to use to help avoid becoming one of the statistics.
And the pondering goes on.
Dear Lord help me to defend your Word and to live your Word!
Lead us Holy Spirit!!

Angela's April reading
I still don’t like the book. I just don’t get a whole lot of: what do we do about it. Makes me frustrated. I also beg to differ a bit on the part about making things appealing to the younger generation – I think that’s an ok way to catch them, or reel them in. But, then yes we do need to stand on the Word. I do believe that is the truth! I do defend the Word. And I do stand behind the Bible.

Kristie 2nd Goal
My goal this quarter will be to write a 'how to folder' for the STL concession stand in the event that I can not be there to oversee the concessions.
In the folder I will have:
In the folder I will have:
- An advised amount of how much cash (and which size of bills) should be in the cash box for starting the event.
- A price list of concession items. So that whoever writes up the price board knows how much each item sells for.
- An updated list of items that are hot sellers, poor sellers and ideas of new items to try in the STL concession stand.
- A list of teens that have experience in the STL concession stand that will be reliable to help someone new when needed.
And I will also meet with Pastor Annette about who should purchase candy and food as it is needed.

Eric's April reading
What more can I say that is not in this reading. I see how important it is to start teaching biblical relevancy. With all that is being taught in our school systems and on the news with science and it conflicting with the God's word. I understand why confusion and questions can arise if there isn't a clear understanding of what to believe in if your not taught how to defend the christian faith.

Theresa's April Reading
Well I felt he was saying the same things that he said in the last chapter. Through the reading it does make me sad for this generation because it's like they are in two worlds, the world of science and the world of religion. We understand that these worlds are from one creator and they do exist together but do our students? We have to teach biblical relevancy, I'm ready, let's do it. I appreciate that in the back of the book, appendix 3, he listed some books for apologetics. I would like to try to read them all (which would probably take 5 years) but if anyone has a suggestion on which one may be better than the rest please let me know.

Annette's 3 Month Goal (Apr-May-June)
Goal: Fine tune the plans for Summer Experiment as it relates to youth ministry, young adult outreach, and my part in Adopt-A-Block.
Action Steps:
Action Steps:
- Re-work AYM life groups (so every adult can attend an adult life group at least once a month) and meet with Life Group leaders to review the plans.
- Select dates for the new "blended" service to take place (schedule them on WP).
- Find a name for the "blended" service, and create promotional materials.
- Sketch out plans for organizing Adopt-A-Block efforts on the 3 Saturdays that are selected.
- Plan Ardent EP schedule, make a calendar, and publish it (web, email blast, Facebook).
- Make sure the weeks I'm gone for camp are adequately covered in all areas.
Annette's April Book Review
Well, now we're getting to the "solutions" part of the book! That's good. So this chapter was basically some of the ways that we can reclaim Biblical relevancy. I thought we had covered most of this information in some form in the last chapter. ??? So I flew through it looking for the AHA. It accurately addressed the need for defense of the Christian faith, but (since I peeked a little), we don't actually get to the juicy stuff till next chapter. So on we go!

Josh 2nd Quarter Goal
My 2nd Quarter goal is to become a better small group leader for the 7-8th grade boys. I will try to flesh out this concept in my action steps. I, as Eric, have been very frustrated with the boys. They don't listen, they mess around all the time, ................. (exciting nonetheless). Last week I felt there was a minute breakthrough for a few minutes. It made me realize they really need men in their lives that believe in them. I know I need to change my attitude for these guys. I don't feel "called" to work with this age group but for now I am filling a role and need to step it up.
Action Steps:
1a. Pray weekly for the boys by name.
1b. Get a list from Annette with a list of the boys
2. Write down a comment or two about each boy to help me remember their names and faces.
3. Write a list with Eric/Pastor Annette or get a list from Annette with alternate activities to do when the boys are going AWAL with their minds
4. Have a conversation x1/month with Eric about how we are doing praying for the kids.
Hope this works, Josh.

March reading - chapter 4
I didn’t feel as though I gained much ‘insight’ from this chapter. Maybe; because I have heard Ken Ham on the radio enough over the years that I expected him to reach this point. I understand what he is saying: if the church will open a door to question the earth’s age then it opens the door to question anything and everything in the Bible. As he put it “If I can’t trust the Bible in the earthly things, why should I trust it in the spiritual things.”
We can’t pick and choose what we want to believe from the Bible. It is either all truth or it is no more than a story book. We must “Defend the Word, live by the Word, and stand on the Word uncompromisingly.” (pg 91)

Theresa's March reading
Well I thought they could have shortened the chapter a bit if they wouldn't have kept repeating the "millions of years old" statement. I got it the first time they said it. But it is a good point and also a harsh realization that the Church has separated itself from some real life issues. I was completely stunned to read that Charles Darwin is buried in the Westminster Abbey, and I have a hard time not thinking he was the devil's spawn in some way. But then I am reminded that we make choices about what we believe or don't believe. It is really sad that our spiritual forefathers in the church didn't take more of a stand about Darwin's theory and compromised on how old the earth is. I feel a bit discouraged, like how do we erase all the years of people believing that the earth is millions of years old thus discrediting the validity of the Bible in it's very first book. I've decided to turn my focus on the lives I come into contact with instead of worrying about millions that I have no contact with.
I thought there were some really great points made on pg. 84 about the church being irrelevant to believers because of watering down God's word. People want the truth and they want to know that God is connected to everything that exists, otherwise how is He who He says He is? The author also posted a question about whether a person can make a connection with God without a physical reality. It isn't all about emotions but attainable physical evidence, which is why apologetics is so important. One more point that was made that really sparked my interest was the comparison made between the Jews and Greeks in Paul's time, and how that is similar to what the Western world has become. We need to speak in an unbeliever's language for a brief time so that they will understand us when we start to use the believer's language to win them for Christ. Sorry if I sound preachy, I don't mean to, I just felt moved by what was said in this chapter.

Eric's Feb. Reading
After reading 2 & 3 I was confused , alarmed & agreed with how close the statistics were between those that attended church & those that didn't, knowing that I am a part of a youth ministry. The reason why I agreed with the statistics was in my youth I learned about the stories of the bible from my Sunday school teacher but never questioned them just took the teachers word & never had a strong christian faith & belief. Although I don't have children I came back to church (thank God), & am building a strong christian faith & belief through apologetics. I also believe that teaching apologetics shouldn't be solely on the church but should also come from the parents, but knowing that not all youths parents go to church, this makes it more challenging. So I see the importance of renovating & apologetics so the youth have something to stand upon in this generation.

Steve's February Entry
Chapters 2 and 3.
Let me say that I am not for totally getting rid of Sunday School. I agree that it should be renovated and a shared responsibility. It sounds to me it’s more about the content that is taught in Sunday school. Having an allotted time for teaching God’s word is not the problem, it is what is taught as well as how it’s taught. It sounds to me that Sunday school teachers will need more knowledge then just teaching nice Bible stories. It sounds like teachers will need to be prepared and have some skill in teaching apologetics. The question I have, who will want to step up to this responsibility? This type of teacher will have to do some work to have a good understanding in apologetics.
I agree that this is just not a Sunday school problem. Parents will have to step up to the plate to teach their own children. I understand this can be tough because it takes time. It takes time for the parent to read and understand the material. Then the parents will have to relay it to their children. This all takes time. However, if you do, do this, your faith will become much stronger and your kids have a much better chance of staying with their faith. I see this as a top priority for any Christian family.
I have to say I am blessed to have my oldest son take a strong interest in apologetics. If I did not talk about it with him or have apologetics books laying around he may have not gotten interested in it. He could have, but I wanted to do my part in taking responsibility to expose him to it. The Bible talks about raising your kids in the way of the Lord.
Apologetics should be a value in our Christian families. It should be another aspect of raising our kids in the ways of the Lord. I understand I may be coming off in this blog a bit tough, but we need to know why we believe what we believe.
I am not talking about sitting your kids down in your house in desks and having class for an hour everyday. If you want to do that, go for it. I have little conversations with Hunter here and there. I read something and then I bring it up to him to see if he has thought about this. Here is example. "Hunter, can you prove that Jesus was raised from the dead?" It is planting the seed. Hopefully they bite. Another thing my wife and I have done is talk about those issues in front of the kids.

Josh's Feb Posting
I read everyones posts for the month before I decided to post mine. I find it quite interesting to see how people react to how the book was written. I have to admit some of the comments he includes do take me back a bit, but...... for me, it makes me take a step back and really think about what he said and how it impacts me. I think he was very purposeful in his quotes and interesting statements. I find myself getting defensive at times. At the root of this I find myself thinking that one, who is a strong believe, shouldn't question the church so heavily. This is totally not logical thinking because we should be able to question anything as it is likely someone will ask us questions about those very same things. This all ties back to the February reading because he talks about appologetics.
I know appologetics is not new to the church or youth group as I believe Theresa also posted. At least that tells me we are trying to hit the root of what this generation desires. Answers to the tough questions. Not just to tell the to believe because our parents did or because......... but give real life facts of how the Bible proves itself true and relevant in history and our lives today.
Annette had posted 2 questions in her blog, I remember one. She mentioned how things have , been changing in our church and believed this was the result of being sensitive to the Holy Spirit. I agree with her that we have leadership in this church that are allowing themselves to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading. We are very blessed to have this as a desire of the leadership in our church. After reading about all these statistics throughout the book so far I am left to assume that there is a gaping hole the church by and large is not filling, a hole we must fill to retain this generation.

Kristie's February reading: chp 2-3
The night I finished reading chapters 2 & 3 I felt conviction of the way I was ‘filling the role’ I was filling for heir force once a month. I was just seeing myself as a connection for them to enter Ardent a little easier. But, I was convicted of this and prayed that the Holy Spirit would change me and show me how to teach them; even if I am only there once a month.
For the most part this month’s reading was discouraging to me. Yes, it was hopeful that a majority of those who left the church plan on returning when they have children of their own; however, if we are real with ourselves this is still very disturbing because: there is still the fact that they left the church to begin with.
Mr. Ham says
“Dear Lord, help us to not fail those that you have put in our care! May our walk constantly reflect what we teach.”

Mr. Ham says
According to Hebrews 11:1 We are told that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. And it seems that as “good” Christians we accept the ‘idea’ that we just choose to believe without necessarily needing facts other than choosing to believe. But this book, the ‘Truth Project’ and the ‘True U’ series we are doing in Ardent proves that there are facts to prove our ‘faith’ and we need to know these also. Most Sunday school curriculum (at least those that I have seen) seem to teach a bible story and tell the students that it is true but with what I have read it is evident we need to be able to teach them that there are facts to prove the Bible is true. Why are we [the church as a whole] so afraid of doing Sunday school and Wednesday services different than the way they have been done for years and years; because apparently it isn’t the most effective way. As Ken Ham said we have to ‘equip [our students {in Heirforce and Ardent} and even our adults] to be able to defend the basics of their Christian faith and basic beliefs.’“Faith that is not founded on fact will ultimately falter in the storm of secularism that our students face every day.”
“Dear Lord, help us to not fail those that you have put in our care! May our walk constantly reflect what we teach.”

Annette's February reading
OUCH! That opening line is KILLER..."Sunday School is actually more likely to be detrimental to the spiritual and moral health of our children." I'm not sure that I would recommend this book to some of the traditional people that I associate with. That would be a pretty offensive statement to them. We still hear on occasion questions about why we don't have Sunday School at First A/G.
I think we need to be careful about jumping to action here. Your first instinct might be to "change what we're teaching" in Sunday School or life groups. That's NOT what is being communicated here. It's not about teaching Bible stories with accuracy. It's about helping young people to construct a CHRISTIAN WORLD VIEW! That is something different entirely!! That is way more HEART focused than head focused.
This just pressed on me the urgency of crying out to God for supernatural wisdom about how to reach the younger generation. Our man-made ideas aren't working out so well. #1: Parents must step up to their spiritual responsibilities. If they're doing that, then the chances of their children becoming spiritual champions is much greater. #2: This is an admonition to look at what we're doing in children/youth ministry and why we're doing it. I'm all for renovation! Let's allow God to shake up the way we minister to kids. I believe He already has been...we're doing most things differently than they were done before. I believe that was Holy Spirit driven. What do you think?
I agree wholeheartedly with the challenge to bring apologetics into every level of Christian Education. I'm so glad to hear them say that! We need to match the aggressiveness of our culture in how they're indoctrinating young people with their apologetics of evolution and secular humanism. Here's another shocker...
Let there be no mistake, it's time to do something - it's time for YOU to do something. If not, you might as well sleep in this Sunday. The statistics show that not going won't hurt your kids one bit. In fact, they might be better for it.
Wow, he's not worried about offending us, is he? :o) One thing you will notice throughout the book is that Dr. Ham is obviously very concerned about the Genesis issues. That is his primary focus in ministry so he tends to look for that information a lot. Do you think it's relevant?
I was also struck by the idea that to that group that planned to come back after they had kids felt that the Bible was relevant, but the church was not. We can definitely do something about that!!! While some of this information was discouraging (although not entirely surprising to me), that made me feel very hopeful. I would summarize the findings of these two chapters in this way: it's time for the church to GET REAL!

Theresa's February Reading, Chapters 2-3
Well when I first started reading I felt very disheartened, like there was no hope to stopping this epidemic. But as I read on my pulse quickened and my heart rate went up and I couldn't believe it but I started to become excited about what I was reading. In chapter 2 they talked about renovating Sunday School and Youth Ministry but they didn't just leave us hanging, wondering how to do that, they told you. Apologetics!!!! This is something that is not new in our church or Ardent, but now they are encouraging us to make this a priority, so encouraging. After reading this I totally felt on fire to plug into apologetics more for not only my own growth but for our teens as well.
In chapter 3, I was surprised that they basically were saying that if a person is questioning the trueness of Genesis then they probably aren't going to believe what the rest of the bible has to say. I never looked at it this way, but it really makes sense. Another question that surprised me, was when they were asking the non-church attendees what they missed most about church and their response was "I miss worshiping God". Wow that is so powerful. And the next sentence says that we are dealing with souls and not statistics. This gives me hope because even though someone isn't being obedient in their walk with Christ they still have a desire to worship Him. To me that is even more evidence that God is real. This book is really great and I so appreciate all the research that went into it.
Now I am probably going to have to stop watching TV altogether because with everything that is already on my reading list, I think I'll be adding some apologetics reading too.
